Travellers must hold a visa; among other documents, a national passport valid for at least a further six months must be submitted on application. In Germany, the application procedure takes approximately seven to ten workdays.

The Azerbaijani Republic is located in eastern Transcaucasia; it is bounded on the north by Georgia and the Russian Federation, on the east by the Caspian Sea, on the south by Iran, and on the west by Armenia. The Autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan, an Azerbaijani exclave, is located southwest of Azerbaijan proper. Azerbaijan also includes within its borders the predominantly Armenian autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Total area: 86,600km².
Administrative divisions: 65 districts and 11 cities.

The country´s official language is Azerbaijani (Azeri), a Turkic language which since 1992 is written in Latin script (since 2001 the use of Latin script is binding).
Many people also speak Russian. In some hotels - in particular in Baku - English is spoken as well.

Hotels are usually equipped with Turkish sockets which are also suitable for plugs used in continental Europe. A protective device against excessive electric voltage should be taken for sensitive electrical appliances.

Letters mailed to Western Europe sometimes take weeks to arrive; occasionally they get lost altogether.

The international dialling code for calls from Western Europe to Azerbaijan is 00994; in the case of calls from Azerbaijan to Western Europe the prefix "00" must be dialled prior to the relevant international country code (for instance in the case of calls to Germany: 00-49; the first "0" digit of the area code must be omitted). From public phone boxes only local calls can be made. Long-distance calls (and international calls) must be made from telephone centres or major hotels.

Information for users of mobile phones registered with German network providers: Mobile phones connected to T-Mobile, E-.Plus, O2 or Vodafone networks can be used due to international roaming agreements. Travellers intending to use other mobile phones are advised to contact their network provider for detailed information.

Moreover there are several annual movable Islamic public holidays. Sunday is the weekly day of rest.

Clothes |

In summer, light, airy and easily washable clothes are appropriate; travellers are advised to dress modestly, as the population of Azerbaijan is predominantly Muslim. In autumn and spring, between-seasons clothes should be taken, and for the period from December to February warm clothes are recommended.
