Entry for German Nationals  
Travellers are exempt from holding a visa, usually for a stay of up to six months (the maximum period of stay is stipulated by the immigration authority on arrival), provided they are holding a national passport valid beyond the intended period of stay, return tickets, and sufficient funds for their stay.

Geographical Location  
Canada lies in the North of the American continent; to the south it is bordered by the USA, to the west by the Pacific Ocean and Alaska, to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Baffin Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. After the Russian Federation, Canada is the second-largest country of the world.
Total area: 9.984.670 km².

CITIES: Ottawa (capital) with suburbs 1 million inhabitants; (figures for the so-called Metropolitan Area) Toronto 4.7 million, Montreal 3.4 million, Vancouver 2 million, Edmonton 938,000, Calgary 951,400, Winnipeg 671,200, Quebec 683,000, Hamilton 663,000, Kitchener 415,000, Halifax 359,000.
Today approximately 975,000 descendents of the aboriginal population (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) live in Canada.

Language  
In Canada there are two national languages: English and French. In the most provinces English is spoken, the province of Manitoba is officially bilingual and in Quebec French is spoken.

Time Difference  
From the East to the West Central European Time (CET) -4 1/2 hours to -9 hours. Canadian summer time begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the last Saturday in October (the major part of this period corresponds to the European summer time, thus the time difference remains the same; exception - at the beginning of the Canadian summer time -3 1/2 hours to -8 hours).

Telephone  
The international dialling code for calls from Western Europe to Canada is 001. For calls to Europe, the prefix "011" must be dialled prior to the dialling code of the individual country, followed by the local dialling code and number of the person you intend to call. Long-distance calls may be paid by credit card or telephone card.

Mobile Phones  
Mobile network technologies: GSM 850/1900
Tri-band and quad-band mobile phones are capable to operate on GSM 1900 networks. A quad-band mobile phone is needed for the GSM 850 network technology. It is also possible to rent mobile phones.
Information for users of mobile phones registered with German network providers: Due to international roaming agreements it is possible to use mobile phones connected to the E-Plus, O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone networks.

Public Holidays  
1st January (New Year), Good Friday, Easter Monday, mid-May (Victoria Day), 1st July (Canada Day), first Monday in September (Labour Day), second Monday in October (Thanksgiving), 11th November (Rememberance Day), 25th and 26th Dezember (Christmas). The individual provinces also have their own bank holidays.
The main holiday season ranges from early July to end-August.

Shops: Mon to Fri 9a.m.-5:30p.m., Thurs and Fri 9a.m.-9p.m; smaller shops (food etc.) are generally open until late in the evening, some are open over the whole weekend
