Travellers must hold a visa; among other documents, a national passport valid for at least a further six months, tickets for the return journey and proof of sufficient funds must be submitted on application for the visa. The application usually takes at least two weeks.

Algeria is situated on the coast of North Africa; to the east it is bordered by Tunisia and Libya, to the south by Niger and Mali, to the southwest by Mauritania, and to the west by Morocco. Algeria is - after the Republic of Sudan - Africa´s second largest country. The major part of the Algerian population lives in the coastal area; there also the largest cities and the tourist resorts are found. 85 per cent of Algeria´s territory are covered by the Sahara desert.
Total area: 2,381,741 km².
Administrative divisions: 48 administrative districts (wilayat).

Clothes |

Light, airy clothes as well as good sunglasses and protection against the sun should be taken during the warm seasons. In autumn and winter, between-seasons clothes and warm coats are needed when travelling in the coastal region; during this time of the year a raincoat or other rainwear is essential. Light clothes for the day are needed when travelling in the Sahara; protection against the sun is indispensable. Woollen clothes and blankets are needed during the night.
Travellers should bear in mind that they are travelling in an Islamic country (no low-cut tops or shorts should be worn).
