At some specific points of entry travellers can obtain a visa for a stay of up to 30 days on arrival. Requirements: national passport (containing at least one blank page) valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay; business travellers (the term is narrowly interpreted: only applicable to travellers attending business meetings; for journalists it is not possible to obtain a visa on arrival!) are additionally required to hold a letter of invitation/sponsorship from the Indonesian business partner as well as a letter from the German company confirming that it will bear all costs for the stay in Indonesia.

The Republic of Indonesia consists of a total of 17,000 islands, approximately 6,000 of which are inhabited. The majority of the population lives on 30 smaller archipelagoes and on the main islands Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, Bali, Kalimantan and Irian Jaya.
The island state of Indonesia is situated on both sides of the equator (for the most part south of the equator), and extends over a distance of 5,100 km from east to west. Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi belong to the Greater Sunda Islands; the Lesser Sunda Islands range from Bali to Timor; the islands between Irian Jaya and Sulawesi are called the Maluku Islands.
The country shares land borders with Malaysia and Timor Leste.
Total area: 1,912,988 km².
Administrative districts: 30 provinces, two districts of which have a special autonomy status (Aceh and Papua); one capital district (Jakarta).

Bahasa Indonesia is the national language. Moreover, there are numerous regional languages. English is spoken in business life.

Western zone (Sumatra, Java, West and Central Kalimantan): Central European Time (CET) +6 hours;
central zone (East and South Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tengarra): CET +7 hours;
eastern zone (Moluccas, Irian Jaya): CET +8 hours.
During European summer time, the time difference is reduced by one hour in all zones.

Most hotels have 220/230 V alternating current, 50 Hz; in rural areas also 110V, 50Hz. European round pin plugs and British three-pole flat plugs are mainly used. Travellers are advised to invariably carry an adapter. Considerable fluctuations in current are a common occurrence during the evening hours.

Post sent to Europe will take up to 10 days to arrive. Postal services in Indonesia are reliable.
The international dialling code for calls from Western Europe to Indonesia is 0062. For international calls from Indonesia, the prefix "001" must be dialled before the relevant country code (in the case of calls to Germany, for example, 00149). In the larger cities and hotels, direct dialling is possible; moreover, there are modern telephone centres (WARTEL), offering international telephone services (frequently, internet and fax connections are also available).

Information for users of mobile phones registered with German network providers: Mobile phones connected to E-Plus, O2, T-Mobile or Vodafone networks can be used due to international roaming agreements. Travellers intending to use other mobile phones are advised to contact their network provider for detailed information.

1 January (New Year), Chinese New Year, Good Friday, Ascension Day, 17 August (Independence Day), 25 December (Christmas), 26 December (St. Stephen´s Day). Additionally, there are annual movable Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist religious holidays.
There is no uniform main holiday season in Indonesia.

Clothes |

Travellers are recommended to carry light summer clothes, which should be airy and easily washable. However, light woollen clothes are also needed in the mountains. In business life and for special occasions, formal dress is required. Outside beaches and hotel areas, inconspicuous clothes should be worn.
Rainwear and good sunglasses are needed throughout the year.
