Travellers must hold a visa; among other documents, a national passport valid for at least six months beyond the period of the intended stay must be submitted on application. The visa application procedure takes approximately seven days.

The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in Central Asia; it is a CIS member state. To the north, it is bordered by the Russian Federation, to the west by the Caspian Sea, to the south by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, and to the east by the People's Republic of China.
Total area: 2,717,300km².
Administrative divisions: 14 regions (oblasts) and the capital district.

The territory of Kazakhstan extends over the following three time zones: Western Kazakhstan, CET +3 hours; Central Kazakhstan, CET +4 hours; Eastern Kazakhstan, CET +5 hours. As Kazakhstan also implements summer time, the time difference remains unchanged throughout the year.

The international dialling code for calls from Western Europe to Kazakhstan is 007. After the area code, one must either dial the six-digit telephone number or a five-digit number preceded by a "2". In the case of calls from Kazakhstan to Western Europe, the international prefix "810" must be dialled prior to the country code (for instance in the case of Germany: 810-49).

Information for users of mobile phones registered with German network providers: Mobile phones connected to E-Plus, O2, T-Mobile or Vodafone networks can be used due to international roaming agreements. Travellers intending to use other mobile phones are advised to contact their network provider for detailed information.

When travelling during the summer months, light and airy clothes are appropriate; travellers should also take woollen clothes for the slightly cooler evenings, and they should also not forget to take some protection against the sun and good sunglasses. During the winter months, warm winter clothes are needed.
